I would think using pure ammonia would be a much cleaner way to cycle a tank rather than with fish food which can rot and mold. Granted, I have never cycled using the fish food method, I've always just seeded new tanks with mature media from one of my other tanks. I'm just curious about how much of a mess the fish food or rotting prawn method makes in your tank.
The fish food I put on top of the filter pad in my wet/dry, so it didnt go anywhere or make a mess. The shrimp....yeah I dont remember back that far. lol, but I think I just tossed it in, so it probably made a mess once it started falling apart.
