I set up a 55g and started the cycle about around Dec. 27th. Everything looked good until my ammonia spiked up to 8. I figured no biggie because it was fishless so wasn't hurting anything. No go. Month later its still up at 8, so i did a complete water change and checked again. Everything in the green, and i figured i'd check it again the next morning. Its now at 2.5 and it won't drop anymore. Everything was washed prior to putting it into the tank, both filters are new and i'm starting to go out of my mind. Any ideas out there?

so its a fishless cycle? what are you using to cause the amonia, because it shouldnt be that high, if your adding clear amonia you should be only adding enough amonia to get it to 5ppm.

i used clear ammonia and i added the recommended amount for 55g and I haven't added any since. The filters on the tank: Emperor 400 (which came with the tank) and a Marineland Penguin 350 BIO-Wheel Power Filter.

I wrote a piece on Fishless Cycling...you need to read it and tell me what you did different...
When you say the recommended amount what do you mean? How much and how often? Did you get a Test kit with drops or Strips?

Read your post, and its very simular to the one i followed but the initial ammonia lvls never dropped off. In fact instead of hitting a 5 it hit an 8. I have both test kits, the strips and the one with the drops. I've never tried a fishless cycle before and i think this experience has discouraged me from ever try it again.

I'm going home tonight and starting over from scratch. Just going to replace all the rock/gravel and the media in the filters then toss in a few feeders.
