I think NJ is 12-13 cents per kw. But ya that's the cost my tank runs during the summers. Winter is merely double the cost.

what I dont get is if your dad makes good money why dont you just fork out a little bit so in the long run you can save? then use that money to buy more tanks rather then just throw it out?
My basement has a huge space in it. By this space I'm saying there is like half a rectangle which is in the wall and it is a small section which goes into the wall. A glass tank to fit these dimensions I need would cost well over $5000 just for the tank and stand. I also have a very good source for wood. My moms boyfriend of 5 years (lol don't know why I said that) works in a blasting mine. He has many sources of people to get free wood from so for me I get free 2x4's and free plywood. So I can get materials really cheap. Also id like to build things as I want to go to school in the future for building and designing and my this seems to be the perfect boost for more inspiration on building it.

Because he doesn't have the means for such a project. He said earlier he was going to use 2 FX5s and a 300w heater...He's going to have his parents boost his allowance to $20/week...Most people who have a tank that size make more than $20/hour. I'm not trying to be mean, just realistic. There's a reason why a lot of us don't have a massive tank. They cost a fortune to run. Another thing I want to note is that I'm sure you plan on going to college. What happens to the tank in 4 years?

How big of a sump would I need? Also I have a 1500 gph pond pump. Is this enough? Also can I build the sump out of plywood like the plywood tank? I was thinking maybe a 100 gallon sump? Thanks guys for all the help

1500gph???? Not likely. More likely u be looking at 4000gph. Your 1500gph pond pump is rated at 0' head. With head loss at 5' your pump would be doin 900-1000gph max. Maybe less then that depending how many bends u have in your plumbing(-100gph per bend). Your filtration will be running 1.5-2 times per hour. With your thinking on filtration setup your definitely looking at a murky tank.

Tank will most likely be down in 4 years. Or my dad or mom will maintain it. By saying my allowance boosted up $20 a week I'm saying I would get $20 more than what I already get. I get $40 a week. So id be getting somewhere around $60-$70 a week. As this would help a lot with saving. My dad will pay most of it either way. I might not even have myself funds until maybe September.I will have to see when I can do this. I will collect as many materials as possible until I have funding. I have readily available a lot of wood. So the wood I might not even need. I'm starting to save every dime I get now. Sometimes if I feel that I'm gonna spend a lot of my money ill ask my parents to hold onto it. Currently my dad has $600 cash that's all mine

You better save way more then that. My 100 gallon sump costs was roughly $1100-$1200 alone. This was DIY too. Costs include used Tank, drilled, bulkheads, glass baffles, custom drip plate, bio media/chemical/mech media, filter socks and holder, return pump, over flows, PVC piping/unions/ball valves. In the end my whole filtration set up ran me $1600-$1700 including UV sterilizer and reactor/Purigen costs.

Andrew, go ask your father if your hobby is worth spending $15,000 or more over the next four years. If he says yes, get on it. If he doesn't like that number, maybe you should consider building an indoor pond. The startup cost is minute compared to a tank and you could still be happy and have large colonies of fish.
