Andrew, get a 125, raise your Oscar to adulthood; if you are still in the hobby then, go for the big stuff. Trust me, for people your age, life happens...and fast ;)

This is not a put down, I am rather envious of you. With a wife and kid, nothing happens fast for me, so a 300 gallon can happen and I know I can keep it for at least 5 years :)

I too would just get a second hand tank, always here about craiglist being the best place to go and these amazing deals so why not get one of them? recently down here there was a 8x2x2 3 tier for sale with a sump for $400 that would be good enough for your fish and u even have 2 more tanks to fill ;) I am sure u can find something.

Tank will most likely be down in 4 years. Or my dad or mom will maintain it. By saying my allowance boosted up $20 a week I'm saying I would get $20 more than what I already get. I get $40 a week. So id be getting somewhere around $60-$70 a week. As this would help a lot with saving. My dad will pay most of it either way. I might not even have myself funds until maybe September.I will have to see when I can do this. I will collect as many materials as possible until I have funding. I have readily available a lot of wood. So the wood I might not even need. I'm starting to save every dime I get now. Sometimes if I feel that I'm gonna spend a lot of my money ill ask my parents to hold onto it. Currently my dad has $600 cash that's all mine :D. Lol this will all go into my tank. So for rough material cost other than wood what would cost be? Including every single thing except wood? Thanks. Haven't really gotten a solid price other than people giving me electric costs.

I just finished setting up a 120G tank and even that was about $1200. I am only 16 so it wasn't easy spending that much on a tank but I have no regrets. I've never built a tank that big but you are looking at much much more than $600...I would say if you do it all yourself, in the end it will cost somewhere near $5,000 probably more. If I were you, I would check out this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?468208-523-gallon-plywood-build-(pic-heavy)
He did something similar to what you want to do and it will probably help you out a lot. Good luck but I would make sure your dedicated to spending whatever needs to be spent and build what ever needs to be built before starting. It would be pretty bad to get half way through only to find out you truly don't want to spend that much or do anymore work. Also make sure you do your research as you don't what it to leak or crack after a few months. If you do decide to build the tank still, make sure you keep us updated with pics. Good luck again

I agree. A 125 might be a bit small for his stock but a 210 gallon 72x24x30 would be good for a long time or for life even. You don't need a 500 gallon for the stock u mentioned.

Lol. I'm spoiled I know lmao. My current stock is 3 jack dempseys and 3 oscars. All under 5". They are in a 55. Thought it would be cheaper to build a tank than get a used one. Cheapest I've seen a 100+ gallon tank was in the $500 range. I might just build a 200 gallon or something just for now. I need something for my stock before they get too big for my tank. BTW they are in a 55

I'm sure u can find a used tank cheaper then that. Get a used 180-210 gallon for $500, run 2 x fx5 with 2 x 300 watt heaters and your set.

I believe somewhere along here, you said were in North Jersey? I went on CL, here are some that I found 100 gal+ up and under $600 (which is still VERY expensive I realize, holy cow are prices there HIGH!)
100 Gal (6 feet long)- $425 tank, stand, and canopy http://newjersey.craigslist.org/hsh/2991617013.html
130 Gal (6 feet long)- $500 tank, stand, lights, filter http://newjersey.craigslist.org/fuo/2981385768.html
125 Gal (fully set up with fish)- $600 or will trade, I believe you mentioned you had quads somewhere? http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/bar/2990220870.html
(You'd obviously have to ask him to rehome the fish, or rehome them yourself)
180 Gal (just the tank itself, but you could build a stand I bet!) http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pet/2920079656.html

125 Gal (tank, stand, custom light, and filter)- $500 OBO http://jerseyshore.craigslist.org/for/2952311101.html
250 Gal (5 foot, tank, filter, and stand)- $500 http://newjersey.craigslist.org/for/2922947855.html
150 Gal (tank, canopy, stand, I think the filter too, 72") $550 http://newjersey.craigslist.org/for/2951605065.html
125 Gal (tank, hood, bulbs, etc.) $500 http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pet/2978532643.html
110 Gal (tank, lights, canister filter) $350 OBO http://newjersey.craigslist.org/search/pet?query=aquarium&srchType=A
110 Gal (tank, hood, filter, and lights) $400 OBO http://jerseyshore.craigslist.org/pet/2971350573.html
150 Gal (tank only no price listed) http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pet/2977611246.html

Hopefully this helps a little bit if you don't want to make a tank. I can't get over how darn expensive everything is there!
Here's what $500 can get you where I live http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/for/2980929196.html
