Damn, I am so Disappointed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have had very good experiences with my small fish communities. You arent giving your fish enough time to get aquainted with their environment; can easily take a couple months.

cichlids and other big fish can be just as shy as small ones. almost all the fish in my experience have gone through orientation frights for 1-20 weeks after purchase.

I started off with them funky looking goldfish in a bowl, until I got a 20Gal L from my cousing for 5 bucks(thank god he worked at a pet store) Then slowly moved to a 55Gal then to a 75Gal an now I have a 120Gal. Almost always had cichlids though.

thats probably why we all are members to MonsterFishKeepers and not GuppiesandNeons.com -- ive tried the community setup before (more for the opportunity to do a fully planted tank) and fw community fish just aren't that interesting -- i do although love my reef tank community but that is completely different -- there is not doubt about it monster predators rule

Howdy,

I couldn't agree more. Maybe you haven't offered them the right habitat, either. Many of these fish feel more secure in a planted tank, dark substrate, maybe even humic substances (peat filtration), floating plants or cork bark. Especially with the gouramis, you should be able to pick out personalities quite easily, their social behavior is really fascinating and complex (especially with different genders and a larger group of fish). Again, that all lies in the eye of the beholder. Just be patient, and what you'll be able to observe will be greatly rewarding. It ain't no killing frenzy, but I am sure you didn't expect that from these fish anyways.

i have a planted tank that houses 50 plus
neon tetras. kinda cool. it does take them a while to
get use to their new home

The reason while little fishes run and hide every time you walk by because they're afraid you're the type of big, scary fish that everyone enjoys keeping on this board. Bigger fish are so much more interactive. I started out like the normal hobbyist with a ten gallon. I was 10 years old and all I had was the Tetra beginner's book for noobs. I tried all of them...mollies, barbs, gouramis, etc but sooner or later I had a craving for something bigger, like oscars, eels, and the like. I had a couple of simple fish that I liked basically because they wouldn't die. There was a rosey barb in my tank that lived for 2 years with little or no water changes and irregular feedings...

that would seem pretty relaxing to look at. Add some time of plant setup and it would rock. Little fish need love to

I also started off with small fish in a 30 gallon tank. It was Boring and I just ended up feeding them to a 7' Pacu that I purchased just for that reason! Mass Murder. :screwy: :grinyes:
