Does anyone have any experience keeping these guys (Dampiera Pseudochromis, Labracinus cyclophthalmus)?

I've read plenty, but as I'm sure we all know, actual experiences tend to vary quite a bit from what "the book" says.

My main concern is that they are the fish that bridges the genetic gap between Pseudochromis and Groupers...and I have a grouper. Has anyone tried this out? I don't want to jepordize either of the fish so I figured I would see if anyone could share their experience(s).

Im not 100% sure on the species but dottybacks dont really get big enough to live with groupers very long. I have kept a yellow dottyback (not sure of species) with a miniata and a 6 lined soapfish before and it was fine. he cruised around the cracks of the rocks and came out to eat when food was dropped in and they never payed any attention to him. In the end they would have eaten him though.

These guys get up to nine inches, so that won't be a problem. That's where my concern comes in though. Because he will be a similar size there is competition for food and hide spots. The one at my lfs is about 6-7" so he's plenty big to avoid getting eaten.

why not get a hog or wrasse?
you dead set on this fish?

I have a lunare wrasse already...The one I saw at the lfs was absolutely beautiful and would look nice in my tank. I'm not a big fan of the hogfish, other than the ones that WAY too big for my liking.

What sort of grouper do you have?? What colour is it?
Most of them get over a foot and if it get much bigger then that it will still be good bye dottyback.
If they are different colours i wouldnt be too worried. Dottybacks are aggressive though so i think if you add anything after it that fish will be in trouble.

I have a V-Tail, or Flagtail grouper...Cephalopholis urodelus. He's one of the smaller groupers...maxing out at about 11". I was thinking the same thing as far as the pattern...that I could get away with it because they are not conspecific and have a very different pattern.

Yeah, I'm aware of the dottyback aggression...it actually is my last fish. I've been eyeing it for a while but I didn't want to add that one until I had everything else I wanted.

We'll see...

I would be more worried about the grouper attacking it then the other way around. Once they are settled they should be ok.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. My grouper is definitely one of the most dominant fish in the tank. My wrasse is slowly taking over though. :D

until today, i would have recommended this fish for you. i have had mine now for three years in a 180g. in the last week he has become extremely aggressive. he is about 7" long. never had a problem with him before. reclusive, but aggressive eater. in the last week, he has killed or caused the deaths of (by harassing til they jump out) 3 fish including a porcupine puffer twice his size, niger trigger, and just today my favorite harlequin wrasse.

he may be fine with your bigger fish. just thought i'd voice my experience realizing, of course, they are all different. btw, my water parameters are all wonderful and no changes in any inhabitants so this is a mystery to me. my regal tang and foxface are the only ones left.
