Dangers of Electric Catfish???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Homer is now about 14". I am not exactly positive on that. But I have been shocked plenty of times and have not had any serious side effects so far. When he was smaller the shock would just travel through my hand an that was it, but now it travels all the way up my arm. I guess I realy need to pay more attention when cleaning out the tank.

I hear they get pretty dangerous when they hit the 3 foot mark... just take precations. They are such a cool fish... we had a little guy at my old work and he would hand feed.

Yeah hand feeding an electric catfish is not that big of a deal. They do become alot like a trained dog. Walk up to the tank and they are ready to eat. I hand feed mine every think and have for a l ong time. I have never been shocked while feeding.

Even though occasionally M. Electricus reaches 3 feet, usually it only reaches 12-18" as a max adult size in the wild. I have never seen one larger than a foot in an aquarium.

I touched a 1 1/2" electric catfish and it packs quite a punch. If you ever touch one, you will knock the lid into the water and soak your floor. I had a co-worker touch it and he screamed and fell backwards (granted it was in a bottom row of tanks so he was sitting/standing awkwardly).

If you ever need to move a big guy, taunt him with a rubber stick until he runs out of juice. That's how the pros catch electric eels.
