I am growing out several BGJD and one in paticular has been my favorite. Just wanted your opinions on him. He currently is about 3 inches long. Yes he normally stays this dark. Male or female? Many thanks

All the spangles on the gill plate say female

I wouldnt be surprise if at 6" those spangles are grown out and shows you a male jaw. Its not beard enough for me at that size to say certain female.

Its a female.... some females will have a distinct blue gill plate while others will have speckles of blue on the gill plate. Plus females will get pitch black during breeding. My guess is that its about 3" and ready to breed.

I got them from Richard on Aquabid (Tarmack). The fish is close to 3 inches, I also have another thats smaller is as dark. Those 2 have always been dark. What is strange to me all the fish have blue spangles on gill plate. Maybe not as much as others. (Wonder if its a Blue Gene has more spangles). I can take 20 pics with my little point and shoot Nikon and get 3 or 4 good ones. I'm working on getting a camera were I can use manually. I may even try shooting some video. The one beside the the dark one is a good looking fish also. Will try to get more pics later. Thanks for looking and for the comments.

FYI I feed NLS flake, NLS 1 mm pellet, Frozen Brine and (I know people dont recommend this, Beef Heart flake that Angels plus sell). Its very thin and about 46% protein. Richard has raised all kinds of EBJD and has been highly successful and he feeds 2 things The beefheart flake and Frozen Brine. I have cut mine back on the beefheart to about 3 or 4 feedings a week. Rest of the time frozen brine and NLS.

Analysis: Min. Protein - 46%, Min. Fat - 10%, Max. Fiber - 3%, Max Moisture - 10%
Ingredients: Fish Meal, Soy Meal, Beefhearts, Shrimp Meal, Wheat Flour, Brewers Yeast, Corn Starch, Krill Meal, Algenate Lecithin, Spirulina, Propolyene Glycol, Sorbitol, Calcium Phosphate, Anise Oil, Vitamins, Minerals, Ethoxyquin, Natural & Artifical colors.

I disagree with female... my ebjd males tend to be darker than the females. Not saying its 100% a male, but from my experience I would not base it being a female due to it being darker than the others.
