Hi, went to Lfs today and saw a noticeable dark dorado compared to the others.

Anyone had any experience with such lookin dorado?

Going off its head it looks like a brasiliensis compared to the one behind it, but that's not always accurate.

Hey man appreciated your feedback, here's 2 more pictures, does it still look like a brasiliensis? How about the others?

Looks like a pack of frankies to me. I'm counting 11-13 scales between what I think is the lateral line and the dorsal fin on all the fish. Better pics would help make it more sure.

Still though, that's an unusual looking fish and I'd snap him up.

Hah thanks man! Always felt good to have you here. Alright definitely will take him now. Oh ya one quick question, if you can only choose one type of fish (Dorado or ATF) preferably in shoal of 3, which will you go for?

Historically, my answer would have been ATF. At present however, I find myself with no tanks and no fish. If I were to start over again, I'd probably do a dorado just for the challenge of something new. I've kept all of the ATF species. I invested years of time and thousands of dollars into ATF. I've never had a chance to own a dorado. I'd like to do something new.

FWIW though, by all reports, (especially those coming from my very respected colleague DB junkie DB junkie ) dorados do NOT do well in packs.

Looking at those it's head looks more pointed than the first pics. Angles are everything lol. But that way isn't always accurate. Dorado are more solitary I think. Like gatf. Where as smaller atf, school a little though they can be solitary too I believe, I've read conflicting information about there wild behavior, but I saw a video of a huge school of them before on YouTube in the wild. If I were to keep one in a group of 3 I'd attempt it with vatf. But if it were up to me on which fish I'd keep, I'd keep one dorado over a group of atf. I like the more brutish look and how it's on patrol more than an atf.

I have kept 2 dorados 16"-18" successfully along with other tankmates.

Hah I ended up going for Dorado just because the ATF in my lfs have damaged their snout... Don't want to risk having a oddly looking tiger. So ended up buying the dark spotted and 2 other normal looking dorado.

If they don't do well in packs, I will separate them by having the blackie solo in the main tank.

Thats my only wishes atm, just hope 3 of them will do well. But the 2 normal looking dorados is shoaling together leaving the blackie swim alone.
