Yup, he's definitely a Fantail since there's very few Tippecanoes in "central-western" PA streams. How's he doing in captivity, eating well? Oh and is it in a tank with vertical (air stone, sponge filter, etc) or horizontal (powerhead or modified HOB) circulation?
hes good, ate blood worms the first day he was in there lol. the tank has both, 2 HOBS and a sponge on one side, and a powerhead pushing water around the tank from the same side as the HOB's.

Jeez, if I used that many power filters on all my tanks, I'd be broke pretty fast LOL. Good to hear the fish is doing well, though.
 
There's no Swamp Darters in western PA, plus they have a blunter head and greener coloration than the fish in the picture.
are you sure? I swear I've kept darters that look AWFUL like the swamp darter pics I've looked up...then again they could just be a differently patterned johnny darter as well.

haha I have 4 HOBs, 3 canisters and 2 powerheads and one return pump running between my 3 tanks.
