Have atlast managed to change substrate of my dat and Ray tank

Before

After
This was right after adding the new substrate.

After 2 days
The ray has started to enjoy the new substrate.

I had to get rid of my sand. The fish kept tossing it into the pump intakes etc.
I put on intake sponges, but they just clogged within 2 days.

How do you keep it out of the pumps?

Also, what makes Dats so popular? I see lots of folks who love their Dats.

I plumb the pump atleast 8" above the bottom, in any tank that I have sand, that way the pump is not affected by the sand.

Dats are rewarding fish, they take time to grow, that moment when they are stable and show dark stripes on bright gold, it's worth all the wait and trouble.

Most of the dats in that tank are more than 5-6 years old.

my pump sit on the floor with the sand... it does not get clogged up , though initially it shifted quite a bit of sand to the sump... already 1yrs and 8 months... pump shaft still looks as good as new....

have a picture of the inside of my pump in this thread... page 8

Datnioids is best described as an little puppy but in an tank. Once you go dat you never go back. I was not fond of them when i started the monster side of the hobby until i saw an 50cm IT that begged for food. It was litterally like an puppy with its eyes.

So true. And the pectoral fins are always going, almost fluttering like a puffer. Mine is always watching me. I’m like, “ turn around, there’s some food for you” but it’s too busy watching me to pay attention to the food. Then it attacks the glass because it sees the reflection of the food in the glass behind itself. So cute. Lol

Wow you guys have very entertaining Dats, mine have always hid in the dark corners in the tank.

A few weeks ago before I got all my dats in one tank, I was frantically searching for one of my indo dats in a 200 gallon, the dat is like 8", and I just couldn't find it in 6" of water even after removing all the driftwood.

Nice tank! Is anyone having luck getting their Dats on some sort of pellet?

Both the Dats that I've kept were on pellet diets. I also noticed my Dats don't exhibit the "stable" color all the time. That pattern is only shown when they are stressed out. Usually when he fights with the arowana. I feed mine hikari massivore and he'll eat the large algae wafers too.
