Just done a water change caught my dat out an his colours went to this, his colours were lovley when he was stressed why is this. Does this mean his darker colours are just his natural colours.

Is he in a black tank? Dats do better in clear or blue tanks, in a black tank they are more likely to turn black when they hide in the corners. It's perfectly normal as it's adapting to it's background. The easiest way to get him showing their colours is to split them up. Dats do much better alone then with other dats.

Sometimes when mine get stressed, stripes get real bold. My largest 11" dat hasn't shown his stripes in two yrs, hen couple weeks ago, started changing to stripes again. Really, all u can do is wait. Takes time for dats to get used to enviroment, and you.

I tried dithr fish, but my dats ripped thier fins off, so didn't hav much luck with that method lol

i hate having decoration for my dats to hide behind. I try to have the least amount in my tank and just maybe use some plants. I used to like my driftwood in my tank but they would always hide behind it. they were about 7" and 10"

Yeah, my tank is almost all driftwood, my dats don't hide around it much anymore, swim around a lot. But after the feed, normally lean against that driftwood and loose stripes, changing almost same color as wood. Accept for one, hes bright and bold 24/7. Might b moving dats into new tank soon, might try a bare tank with them, just gravel, n see how they respond to that

Mine have become lighter after I took the dark back ground out, but when feeding yesterday one got spooked an swam into some bog wood now his eye is all cloudy an puffy. Stressful game this fish keeping lol
