Can a dat be bought and automatically live in fresh water? Widebar or thinbar... Also how big do they get? and whats the water pARameters? thank you

Of the five recognized datnoid species, three of them are essentially FW species that require little or no salt: 1) widebar datnoid (Datnioides pulcher), 2) Indonesian datnoid (D. microlepis), and 3) thinbar datnoid (D. undecimradiatus). The remaining two datnoid species occur in both FW and BW in nature: 1) silver datnoid (D. quadrifasciatus) and 2) New Guinea datnoid (D. campbelli). If you're keeping a silver or NG dat in pure FW, I'd recommend adding some crushed coral to keep the pH above 7.
what are good tankmates? Ray, EBJD 5", and some knives work? PH is at 7.0, also how big they reach? thinbar, widebar, and the other one of the 3 freshwater...

All three of the FW species get 15 inches or larger, but dats are VERY slow growers. Your best bet is either a thinbar or Indo dat, especially since these are far less expensive than widebars. Silver dats max out at only 12 inches, but like some salt or alkaline conditions. Dats will do fine w/ any tankmates that aren't too aggressive and are too large to swallow.AquataHolic420;547663; said:

Widebars are much typically 3x as much as a thinbar or Indonesian. If you like the yellow color of a widebar but dont' want to spend the money, you may wish to try an Indo dat, as they tend to have more of a yellow appearance, whereas thinbars have more of a brownish background.AquataHolic420;547911; said:Thanks ITCHYOphile.. u helped me out alot..
