Does it have a lot of personality?...yes

Is it expensive?...yes

and thus causes the owner higher status?...maybe

Or just because they are very beautiful?...yes

;)

dats rule, I have one, he is pretty shy but comes out NAILS a pellet and then runs and hides.

I like the overall shape of the dats, I also like the shape of the fins, mouth and of course the silver and black "tiger stripes" . They have an "old" fish look that I think is really cool, and they are monster fish that can be kept in a community. I am not always swayed by the latest "craze" or high price of "status" fish, I've gone through similar phases with other stuff(collectibles)and I'm over it for the most part. Dats are just a favorite of mine.

They are also hardy fish that works in a community setup. :)

hmm... never really thought of them as being all that "pricey", although I will say I think widebars are way overrated and overpriced.

I never really was a big fan, but now that I have big boys in my community tank, I actually do see why some folks like them. They have the great inquisitive and interactive personality of some of the large cichlids withought being aggressive. The have a different shape and color pattern than most FW fish , just something a little different.

I prefer my INDOs to my widebars... a like the pattern more (my indos have more stripes, thinner, than my widebars) and they are more aggressive feeders... just more fun. AND CHEAPER

ANyway, dats are pretty cool fish. I still think they are overpriced and overhyped... but good fish notnetheless. I have no need for any more, but I would not want to give up the ones I have.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll probably add some into my future monster tank. They do sound like great fish.

I dont particularly like the slow growing part since i'm very impatient. :nilly:

Unless you're looking for one thats already nicely grown they are not expensive. I have a NG and Silver. Just lost two golds thanks to my dumbass brother. They start off shy but can be very personel once settled in.
Never heard of trends in fish keeping. Only this site like the Clown loach and Pbass... I like the different fish cause most people I know only mention red devils, jags and oscars.

i have always liked them but sold off most of my large ones when i had a change of direction with uaru.f and have spent the last few months rebuilding

i think the prices is right for large tiges as it takes years to grow them to 12inch+ and the amound of food that has gone into that fish would have cost $$$

i also dont like calling them dats they are tigers to me as i feel they deserve a better name than dats

If you were to choose between a Dat or an Ornate Bichir, which fish would you buy? My LFS is selling both fish (a 1" Indo, and a 4" Ornate) for $15.00 apiece.:nilly:
