Hello this is my first time posting on this forum I just brought a 5cm datnoid cute as any ways he flashes on the substrate but swims normally and seems to eat other than the flashing seems fine should i be worried????

Well, this could be a couple of things. Flashing usually indicates some sort of irritation of either the gills or skin. Ectoparasites, like gill flukes, irritate the gills and the fish will flash on almost any object. Or this can also be a sign of high levels of ammonia/nitrite.

What are the tank parameters? Can you see any swelling or redness in the gills?

It could be from alot of things from water parameters, ph fluctuations to diseases like ich or flukes, just check your water make sure it isn't the water.
I lost a dat recently to disease and gill hyperplasia, think mine started of with flukes which started of with scratching around the gill area once treated that gills where damage and moved onto gill hyperplasia (swelling of the gills) my fish died of suffocation.

If tou see rapid Breathing think its time to panic because iv'e been told of alot of cases where that weren't resolved. Just keep an eye on it might be nothing and pass hopefully.

gills seem fine it's just on the substrate he eats and is active enough , checked the water nitrite seems a little high not dangerous levels .. would that be the most likley couse just a little paranoid because in australia these are very hard to get .... his colors seem to be fine as well so im guessing he is not over stressed....

Where abouts in Australia are you located?

I tested the PH today and it's at 7.8. Is this ok? i have read that 7.5 should be the highest. Do i need to do some thing about the PH straight away????

That was supposed to be mine, lucky bugger, congrats on the sale.
He was supposed to hold it for a day for me.....nice friend huh.
Look after it well cause i'm looking now and iv'e checked around Perth, Brisbane and Sydney and still cant track one down.

Goodluck with your new fish!
