i heard you can only treat ich when its in a certain stage is this true?

Yes, the ich goes through a couple stages of developement, I always get the names of the stages goofed up. most stages are very resistant to treatment.
Tomonts come in on an infected fish and when mature fall off, they turn into trophonts that attacch themselves to the substrate and encyst. there they divide inside the casing until it bursts releasing betweem 200 and 2000 free swimming theronts that then seek a host. it is the theront stage that is vulnerable, if subjected to salt or meds some will die then but most will attatch and then die before becoming mature tomonts. This is why the fish looks worse in the first day or two of treatment.

Best treatment is heat treatment at 32 degrees for 10 days OR 5 days AFTER the LAST sign of ich.

Salt is good too but i have found it unnecessary but then again there is a few methods to combat ich.

Raise the temperature 1 or 2 degrees everyday until you reach between 32 - 34 degrees celcius. Dont just jump to a high temp as this is stressful for the fish and add a air pump to the tank because the warmer water makes it harder for the fish to breathe.

Hasi, I have found that many strains of ich survive and even thrive at those temps., esp. those strains acquired from tropicals like danios. The high temp does however kill clostia.

I was doing some additional reading, the strains of ich that survive high temps are out of Thailand and Florida, there is also a strain mentioned out of Germany that is resistant to both Malachite green and formalin.

so does that mean it would be harder to cure my datnoid then other fish?

Neo, I would worry about rid-ich and salt, it contains formalin and malachite green that both become more toxic as the salt level goes up.
I don't use it but several sites say you should not use it with salt. I did just check Kordon's website and they say it is safe for salt but don't say how it is formulated to be so.
Have you used it with dats? I never have kept them.

Guppy ive used rid ich with salt and on dats .. but not at the salt levels del described.
And yes, the Datnoid recovered .

Thanks Redtailfool. As I said, I don't use it so it is hard to sort out contradictory info. Nice to hear from someone with hands on experience.
