If you really want that American Tiger, should get it...people will always tell u your tank is never big enough. Ive had a 10" AT (and took a long time to grow that big) in a 75g before, and was more than adequate. So no, you wont have to upgrade tank size. 55 will do just fine if u only keeping one.

Will it get along with several bichirs?

Not sure about several, but I had mine with a 1 9" ornate bichir, and never bothered each other.
