I have a 8" Indo Datnoid that was beautiful when I got him a few months ago. He was in a 125g with a 4" Thinbar and (4) 3" F. rostratus cichlids. I woke up one morning and only counted (3) F. rostratus cichlids-the smallest of the 4 was the one missing- so I removed all of the cichlids and only left the two Dats. The next day I saw his color had faded so badly overnight that I could not even see his black stripes. Now, after about 3 weeks of waiting for his pattern to return I am getting worried it will not. Does anyone know what I should do?

Is he still eating? what are your parameters. my large indo did this when i removed my oscar (the alpha fish). and his good buddy apparently. was like this for over a week, as soon as i put the oscar back the dats color returned to normal. There was alot of turmoil between all the other tankmates while the oscar was gone though.

thanks for the quick replies and some reassurance. I thought too that maybe if he was to get a few more active tankmates back in there he would color up. I will have to try this when the F. Rostratus get a little larger. The Indo is the largest of the tanks inhabitants- only him and the thinbar- so I want to rule out stress. He is a very active eater though I have only been feeding him freeze dried krill and the occasional frozen silverside for a treat. Today I brought home some frozen brine shrimp and beefheart cubes and he hit that it no time. Hopefully the addition of food choice will help out. Water parameters; ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
High ph 8.0

I will have to wait and see. On a side note I changed the lighting from the single floursent strip atop the tank to a couple 2" halogen spotlights mounted from the ceiling rafter above the tank. This was a day or to after I removed the cichlids, so could this decrease in light have contributed to the fade?

I just put a 7" Hampala Barb/Shark in there and after they stopped squaring off on eachother the Dats pattern appears to be coming back and they have become friends. Hope that does the trick!

great to hear!, nice dat

Good to hear that it has stabilized again :)

Indo datnoids will do this though.

I have a large 14" indo that occasionally will lose all color and turn pitch black.

It is just something that you have to expect with indos :(

Many fish lose color for various reasons, usually stress or diet.
