My AT dat is always out, unless I have someone it doesn't know over. Its crazy how fish identify people. As far as hiding, my indo is out in the open, just like to hang beside my bigger chunk of driftwood, pretend its hiding. It still romes around the tank from time to time, and looks very healthy.
