Datnoids are afraid of the light.

All my dat's are doing fine with t5 lighting. Most of the time they are stable. :)
 
we've had our datnoid for a couple weeks now and it does the same thing. we call him Shyguy for comical purposes. i believe they would all rather prefer the dimmer points of the tank. after about 3 weeks he started to come out a little bit more, even with the light on....but only when we were feeding him with the light on.
home depot does sell cheap dimmers.
and i wouldn't stress out on your fish acting this way. its normal.

i would agree i only feed my dat when the lights are on, the little fella soon didnt mind the lights and is now out and about light on or off. but also making sure your water is top notch helps loads aswell, less stress more colour.
 
Well now that they are acclimated they are out and about quite often, light on or not. I'm using two 12'' lights on the tank, with bulbs probably older than me and lots of floating driftwood so the tank is pretty dim. Thanks for all the advice everyone!
 
They got acclimated to the lights that quickly? That's awesome.

If you're using 12" lights, how long is your tank? I have a 48" long tank and picked up a good deal on a 36" light, but I'm going to buy a dimmer switch at Lowe's.

Its a 48'' long, I used to have the two 12'' lights, I now replaced them with a single 30'' cool white light :)
