Datnoids difference?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are many subtle differences between them but the main one is the stripes. The Pulcher (wide bar) has 3 thick bars on the body with the middle one usually having a pronounced slant caudally. Their body shape tends to be taller and they tend to have a characteristic tail bar pattern where the last body stripe "bleeds" or merges with the first tail one. Not all show this but usually. They also can be a brighter yellow or orange.

The Indonesian datnoid or Microlepis has several thinner bars on the body, usually a total of 4 or 5. Their color tends to be more rusty orange and duller. There are 3 barred Indonseian varieties and their middle stribe is not slanted caudally but more straight. Their body shape is not as tall as Pulchers in many cases.

They are both impressive as adults and really a sight to behold in a big tank together. For some reason the Indonesian is always cheaper at smaller sizes but about the same price as Pulchers when they get huge. If you are looking for a "cheap" datnoid then you need to target the Microlepis.

What is a good price for the Datnoid microlepis. I just bought one and got the guy to drop 30 buckss off the retail marked price...I was just wondering what they go for in the US and Canada

Microlepis at a standard 3-4 inch size can be purchased anywhere between $30-$40 or even lower sometimes depending on the season.

Thin bars rule man. When they are monster they are really impressive.

Another nice looking and unique dat would be the new guinea tiger.
