Datnoid's stability mystery

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
T1, there's no need to repeat that your theory/experience with your fish is the norm. We should know by now that IT's stability is up to an individual dat (sorry I meant tiger!) per its liking of the environment/activities that it's currently experiencing. Your IT might like being chased for all we know :) And how could you assume that you fish are always happy the way you put it? :) There's is no absolute right or wrong answer to this subject IMHO.

Still would love to see new pics of your fish though...

I still can not get past the unstable tiger dats in LFS stock tanks. I refuse to believe these fish are "happy" or comfortable.

So a fish has spent weeks in holding tanks without food and bad water it's then put throw the stress of being shipped then it's put in a LFS tank given good water and good food i would say yes they are happy to be in that nice clean water and eating well wouldn't you

No I certainly would not, at least the LFS where I get them, They are kept in tanks with zero cover and are trying to hide under each other they're flipping out trying to hide away and there is no where for them to go. Very skittish and unstable. Like I said I have only kept a few dats in my life but I still say there is no way that these fish are happy or comfortable. I would never think that these fish are happy and content in this tank. I refuse to believe that my dat was happier in this 30 gallon then in my 135 with hiding places. And I don't know about you but most LFS I have been to would not qualify as having clean water and this one is not at all a night at the ritz for fish but Its what I am stuck with. By your own example I would think that my dat is much happier after being stressed in that stock tank. It seems very much to me to be a dominant fish thing. My IT is a dominant fish and spends most of the day out in the open chasing fish around and pigging out. And showing stable bars.

My tank also has no cover or hiding places so your point is
if you give tigers cover or hiding places they will normally go black and blend into the cover so if cover makes them happy that would also mean unstable = happy as most tigers given cover turn black and hide

Your idea is as flawed as mine

The truth is no one knows how or why they turn unstable so this thread is a waste of time

I can't prove stable = unhappy just like no one can prove stable = happy

The bright yellow and black stripes maybe a defence thing like some animals make them selfs look bigger to defend themselfs

If the bright yellow with black stripes is a defence thing then surely that would = stable means stressed

I agree no one knows . I don't think its a waste of time to discuss it though. I guess my point is I do not think its accurate for anyone to claim that stable dats are not being taken care of correctly. I also did not want to imply that unstable always mean unhappy as well. I never meant to imply that your dats are stressed.

To me no one can prove stable = unhappy or = happy beyond doubt, so the debate is interesting but inconclusive. why dont we all list out situations when our ITs tend to be more stable or unstable so everyone can form their own theory from the fact. i will start first

My 8" IT stays dark most of the time and chases all other dats away from the corner of the tank that he claims, he is only slightly stable when he feeds

My 7" IT stays stable most of time and swims about openly with other dats except the 8" one, but he also gets chased most of the time by him

My 10" 3bar IT stays stable 70% of the time and follows me along the tank begging for food most of the time, colors up really nice (stable) when he feeds

My 11" 3bar IT stable about 50% of the time and likes to stay along the back side of the tank, he also stables up more when he feeds

My 16" ST is stable most of the time and darkens up a little when stressed (WC, cleaning, decor rearrangement etc)
