I've been keeping cichlids for over a year now with very good success. I was in the LFS the other day and saw Datnoids, and couldn't stop checking them out. I have had poor success looking up info on them around the web so I thought I'd turn to the MFK'ers for some much needed help.

I know there are 4-5 different kinds and some like brackish water..I think. But other than that I need to know the basics like tank sizes, growth potential, water params, temps etc.

All I know right now is that they prefer planted tanks as they are predatory fish that stalk their prey, and they can grow to over a foot long.

Throw any links or info you have my way please. it's be cool to have a tank with 4-5 in there but I'm thinking I'd need an 8 footer

thanks everybody!:headbang2

Ok sorry folks. I didn't know this section on Dat's was here (Obviously) so they moved my post, Thanks. Guess I'll start reading these now and ask more questions later

The only species of dat that is 100% brackish is the silver. Sometime, however, NGTs and Indos are kept in BW at LFS and should/can be slowly acclimated back to fresh.

What size dats were they at your LFS? If they were small they are most likely Indos. Dats grow SLOW so 4-5 could live in a 4ft tank for quite some time.

Of course keep up with your water changes to keep your water quality under control, but I have found that they are not too picky about params. My tank has 0=ammonia, 0=nitrite, and about 40=nitrate with a pH of 7.8 and water hard as a rock. I found once that when treating clown loaches for ich and I had a dat in the tank that the dat was most stable and active when I had the temp at 86*. That is a little too high to maintain IMO so I keep my tank around 83*.

yeah very easy to take care of they just grow huge arent aggressive to other fishes of the same size. They do not like each other if u want to put them together put 5+. they grow around 16 inches
