why wouldnt you bother having them davo, i plan to upgrade to bigger when i have the space and money. I have seen plenty being sold on this and other websites when they get big. I dont aim to be selling them i will get a tank to suit their larger size

how long will it take you to upgrade to a large tank? a 50 gallon tank is not suitable for either a dat or bichir long term.

im not getting them till spring next year aiming to get a 100gal a year later when space and other **** will allow so i didnt think a 50 gal would be too small for 3x2-3'' dats considering their slow growth

Heres whatyou wrote ''What does anyone think of putting a dat in with and endli in a 40gal when juvies in order to grow them up Im limited in space for the next or so and that the biggest tank i can stretch to maybe 50 if its tall/''
We can only go by the information provided by you
''im not getting them till spring next year aiming to get a 100gal a year later when space and other **** will allow so i didnt think a 50 gal would be too small for 3x2-3'' dats considering their slow growth''
You'd be better off waiting till you had the bigger tank in your posession, too many times I have seen plans derailed by a crisis rearing its ugly head and the money needed for a bigger tank had to go elsewhere-Anne

Iknow what i wrote and i thought i was perfectly clear. the plan is not going to be derailed i have always got bigger tanks as and when i have needed them and none of my fish have ever become stunted.

I understand your point but i was only asking for your advice on a species ive not kept before and wanted to know if a couple of young dats would be ok in a 50 for a year, i wont be getting a bichir as you have advised i wouldnt be a good idea

well, the advice is clear. young small dats can be kept in a 50 but not for the rest of their lives. remember dats can grow up to 8" in the first year (when fed well) so...

its really up to you, the advise is just for the long term, people here are just thinking of the well being of the dats and the bichir when it grows too big for a fifty gall. keep in mind we always think of max size and the best environment possible when housing any kind of fish. so i hope you don't get discouraged.
