I have always loved the look of a Dat. But I have two questions:

1. Can you have them with aggressive cichlids?
2. Are they brackish?

I kept an AT with some very aggressive cichlids. (managuense, red devil, pike cichlid, lamp. tetracanthus). They only seemed to bother each other. The AT stayed out of there way and eventually got to about 12-13 inches. I always used some salt and choral to keep it on the brackish side. Also kept an ST with a Dempsey and tried some african cichlids which were eaten during the night. The ST was much larger than the 9 inch dempsey, so there were no problems. I would suggest the AT because they are relatively plentiful and hardy. Dont put it in with a fish that is so aggressive that it had to be put into solitary. A cichlid community tank would be best and the cichlids will usually target each other.

Thanks!! Yeah that is the one I want!! Awesome I'll get one and grow him out then try to put him with my cichlids.

They don't have to be that big. Just have lots of caves available.

I've seen larger dats (8+") with cichlids. I normally keep them apart personally, but then again my cichlids typically are more aggressive than the dats I've owned.

I keep my fish together that are less likely to kill one another. It's a strategy that has worked well for me by and large. Although my one dat and the ray lived together for almost a year before the dat attacked the ray. Both went to great beyond after the dat ripped the rays tail off and got the stinger impaled through one eye.

Live animals, so unpredictable at times. :nilly:

Know your fish, and make the choice. What may work could suprise you. Just be prepared to remove or separate fighting fish.

Its hit or miss with keeping them together. Cichlids are the ones you need to watch. Some get along with the dats and then some just want to kill everything.
