Dats & Cichla Combo Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept this combo in the past. The only issue I had was the Pbass growing way faster than the Dats. I was worried that the Dats would end up on an unscheduled feeding. It seems that your Pbass already on the larger size, so...I wouldn't go any smaller than 9", personally.

ive got a 13 to 15 inch mono with a 5 to 6 inch it and have no problems at all. both of them pretty much keep to themselves.

I would say 7-8in. I had a bunch of dats w/ my cichla. Search the threads. If the dats are on a good pellet diet they will grow very quick. But I didnt like the combo because the dats are scale poppers and little punks. I eventually sold off all my dats cause I like my cichla much more. I had 20 indo's and an ngt.

you are asking for A and most of them are giving B answers lol.. for a 15 inch PB i would recommend a 10 inch Dat. Pretty sure the dat cant feed in the PB mouth and the Dat wont end up killing the peacock.

just to be on the safe side. why take the risk?

It's the other way around, I already have the dats (7) 5.5"-13" and I'm considering buying the cichla.

Cool ....that's what I want to hear :) lol

Thanks for the input man. I already know your old stock since I based my sump design loosely on yours/pics ( check out my sig to see how it came out). Let me guess... the "scale popper" was the NGT lol. I know you had some big cichla with (initially) smaller dats ( All mine are on massivore and I always keep up with WCs but still didn't manage match your grow rate) ....did any of your smaller dats become feeders along the way?
Dats are my all time favorite fish and they're not going anywhere. I wasn't really planning on adding any pbass but a 15" WC kelberi on pellets doesn't come around very often.

THe ngt was my main problem. I never lost a dat to any cichla...nor any cichla to a dat. If I was you I would jump on the wc kelberi in a heart beat!

3" dat with 16" bahia get alone just fine , not many fish cant eat dat
