Dats need room

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hear ya TCZeli...I'm in the same boat.

I went with a 150 for my apartment to get a little more height than the 125 for the vertically compressed dats, but still being a managable size to move. You will be fine with a 150 for a couple of years and then upgrading to a 180 or even a little bigger for the long haul.

I am aware of the importance of length and depth of a tank for larger fish, but how important is hight? I plan on upgrading to a 125Gallon. I found on at a decent price taht is 6'x2'x17". The largest fish I plan on having in there are Datnoids (hopfully about 3) but 17 inch seems kind of shallow, no? Anyone have bad experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

oh by the way im loving this forum:headbang2

Depth is hight... most important parts are width and length... hight doesn't matter that much depending on stock... for example if you have large catfish alone they really don't need much depth to stay happy length and width are the utmost important...(pretty much the same with all fish but cats generally need less hight then others...) then you add a top swimmer to the mix lets say a large arow of sorts... The absolute min hight should probably double but the length and width are still the very most important dimensions... you want a length of ruffly 3 times the length of the largest fish(at all times...) and at least the width of the largest fish's length (Sivers and other eel-like slender body fish may live with less width but remember bigger is always better;)). Ok now you add some dats (or any other mid to top water swimmer that you can get to work with combo) Now your hight is a lot more important then before because you're going to need enough room for any fish to be in it water column of choice with out constantly swimming into another fish. Your length is still going to be your largest dimension but now your hight is going to be at least your width or more... Just a run down... IMO you can choose to agree or disagree....

IMO, you're better off getting a standard 120 (4'L x 2'W x 2'H), 125 (6'L x 18"W x 22"H), 150 (5'L x 2'W x 2'H), or 180 (6'L x 2'W x 2'H) than something with "weird" dimensions like you were considering. Think of the resale potential if you ever decide to upgrade. You'll have to look for a ray or catfish enthusiast as a potential buyer.

BTW, it's "height" not "hight"! :screwy:

yea im pretty much settled on 5x2x2 (150G) And I wont be getting an Arow in a 150. As I said before the largest fish will be Dats, and Thin Bars at that (well at least 2 of the 3). Thinking indo to mix it up. But while Thinbars stay smaller then other dats, I am confident the 150 is for me! Now if anyone would respond to my filter question in the setup and filtration forum I would be all set.

Thanks everyone!

Good call good call... spelling has never been my best attribute...
if your planning on keeping your fish for life though what do you care about resale value in 20 years(hopefully at least) or so...
Resale value is germane because the OP mentioned that the tank being considered was for an apartment shared with two other people and that a 400 gallon would be considered when the OP moved into his/her own house.

Correct - 150 now/400 later

i wont be getting rid of the 150 though, i love the hobby and plan on having several tanks especially when i get my own house. 150 is perfect for me now I think, but it seems in this hobby that everytime i THINK something is perfect for me, something changes my mind:nilly:

OH and its HIS own house by the way by the way:D
