dats only eat in the dark?!?!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are nice fish and they are very skittish when they are young. but im assuming when they grow bigger they would be less skittish. mine still runs away from me because i bothered them when i was doing water changes they hate me.

Dats are ambush fish in the wild. This would explain their tendency to hide or go unstable. In the dark they feel more comfotable and will swim about to hunt for food. Like stated above, just need to train them by leaving the lights on more. As your dats get bigger, they tend to be less shy. Also adding a bunch of dats together or lots of other fish in the tank help to encourage swimming about.

my dats wont eat with the lights on. is this normal behavior. once in a while they will get a bite, but usually they wait till i turn out the light to come out and really feed.
any way to change this behavior?

This is not normal behavior. My STs and ITs not only eat with the lights on, but take the food from my hand. I would suggest that perhaps your illumination is too strong. Dats like subdued lighting.

Datnoid101 is correct. It is only natrual for an ambush predator to prefer the dark while eating.

You can train them to eat with the lights on, but it may take some time. Mine all ate with lights on, until I recently got a Jag catfish. Since this guy only comes out in the dark, I changed how they are fed. I found the Datnoids are MUCH more aggressive during feeding now that the lights are off.

I changed my switched my Dats back to the big tank again and they're out swimming the tank again. They swim side by side with the Dovii and other cichlids at feeding time with all the lights on. When I had them in the smaller tank, they were hiding all the time and would go unstable a lot.
