Ive also been interested in dats since I found this website, but have yet to see one for sale, are they rare or hard to find. I just figured they were hard to care for and thought stores around me just didn't want to bother with them

Dats are not really rare nor hard to keep. Just uncommon I guess. I live in Louisville and have only found two dats in as many years. Unless you are on the west coast dats are hard to come by.

I have a guy close to me, who is a vendor here, and I know his fish are good. Other than that, I have not seen them in any LFS around.
