First day home with the new camera (T2i). I am reading through a cool field guide book I got and learning a bit about the settings and where to be creative, but for today I just took a few shots without doing anything special. The first several were in the auto Sport mode (5.6, 1/60, 3200 I believe) and the last one was just full auto with the flash, which is WAY more accurate (color-wise) than the old one. In PS I simply resized and did Auto Color on all of them (not in the mood to mess around a lot so this'll do for now). When I saved for web I felt like it lost a lot of the orange/red-ness, which seemed more accurate in the non-flash photos than the originals, but less accurate after saving. Who knows. I've never really trusted this monitor to be totally accurate.

Am I right to guess that the over-red/orange in the non-flash pics means I was too high on the ISO? I guess the next step will be to try all things being the same but 1600, 800, etc.

It was daylight in the room but the tank light was on. It amazes me how well it captures the imperfections in the crappy acrylic.

Anyway, here are my 4 San Merah discus and Orangehead pairs #1 and 3 (2 are in the breeding tank), in my very first attempt at fish photos with a camera that actually works. What a difference from the old one.

Please forgive the horrible fake plants and awful blue background. Once I solve the issue of the center overflow, I'll get a nice root/tree background. I'm sure the blue messes with the camera quite a bit...

those are some sweet fish

very cool, 3rd pic is my fav very nice

The thing that has impressed me most about this so far is its ability to capture things in low-light situations without a flash. Here are a few pics I took well after midnight when the only light was from another room and the christmas tree lights behind me. As well as the very first photo I took with the camera (flash on) and two in daylight. I didn't edit these at all.

I've taken 200 photos already. They take up over a gig already.... and I'm not even using the Raw + JPEG option I intend to use. Time to get a nice 250gb internal drive for this laptop. I have some externals but I don't usually sit at a desk.

Tips, comments, and especially criticisms are very much appreciated. I want to learn what to look for and how to get good at this stuff.

Dave is doing a nice job!

Nice photos man!

Nice shots!

Higher ISO on digital reduces the color accuracy of most cameras (the more $ the camera, the better it does usually) If you shoot RAW it is easily correctable but you will still have noise. The problem that you face shooting with no flash is you have to combine the high ISO with a high (lower number) aperture, and most lenses do not have their sweet spot wide open. The pictures look great but to really amp it up, try either reflecting the flash up towards ceiling without the hood on the tank, or shooting with external flash mounted above water.
