David R's 2000L tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how you gonna get a sump under the low stand is it gunna be like super long and low
great build

The drains from the overflow run through the wall so the sump can be located behind the tank in the garage. Less noise in the tank room, and easier access to the sump too.

I'll eventually build a timber fascia for around the base of the tank, and most likely a hood to match. I also have a bit of the flooring I lifted left over an will cut it to fit down the sides of the tank between the stand and the wall.

Me too!! I've been thinking about what I'd like to keep with the fish I currently have, and have narrowed it down to either a large group of "Peru Altum" angels (about as close as we get to the real deal here in NZ, true Altums would win hands down if I could get them!) or a group of wild type discus...

On another note I've decided to go with an HMF-style filtration in my sump. The water clarity may not be as good as with the socks, but the frequency of maintenance required won me over. I had designed a good pre-filter to use with the filter socks and was pretty confident it would work, then I sat there for about ten minutes trying to convince myself I wouldn't get pissed off with cleaning it out every few days and gave up on the idea! Here's a quick pic of the sump design, the left half is a big settling chamber that will hopefully catch most of the coarse physical waste, then there is supports for up to six 50mm thick sheets of Poret foam (I'll start off with two 10ppi and two 20ppi and see how that goes first), then an additional chamber for some bio media, 20L of pond matrix plus some bioballs.

Very Nice David. Looks awesome. Was thinking about doing Socks in my sump im building for my 350g but have been trying to toss around some ideas to make it do a great job in itself but not become work for myself to constantly having to clean socks.

Filter socks are super easy to deal with. Get 10 of em. Run atleast 2 in your sump. All you have to do is switch those out every few days. I switch mine each wc. Every 3 or 4 days i do a wc and put fresh filter socks on. Once i am down to my last 2 I throw the dirty ones in the washing machine. NO soap or bleach. Just water. I cycle it once...turn the sock inside out...wash again...turn the sock back inside in :) The wash one more time. DOne the socks are ready to use again. I have had the same socks for over 2 years and my water stays nice and clear.
