David R's 2000L tank build

Nice looking stock! I had filter socks on my old 1400L tank and changing and cleaning them every 3 days is exactly what I got sick of. I couldn't bring myself to put them straight in the washing machine filthy dirty and full of fish poo so used to rinse them out first. On top of the hassle of regular maintenance the fact that you essentially lose all mechanical filtration as soon as they clog also frustrated me. A long weekend away or a day or twos negligence or forgetfulness (pretty easy when doing shift work!) and your bio media is catching all the crap. I agre they do provide fantastic mechanical filtration, but for now I thought I'd give the Poret a try and see how it goes in conjunction with the settling chamber. At the end of the day if I'm not happy with the clarity it will be fairly easy to add a tower for them to this sump and start using them.

Started experimenting with the wood tonight, the big stump looks great and is massive when in the tank. Not sure about the stuff on the left, I'm kinda going for the flooded forest look and want something like a fallen branchy tree for the angels to shelter in. I'm going to build a 'driftwood snag' with some other pieces in the left corner to provide cover for the plecs and I'll try put some of the branchy stuff over it, if it doesn't look right I'll leave it out as it does take a bit of swimming room from the aro.

Congratulations on the tank, it's awesome. I noticed that you cured your own driftwood as I was paging through your thread, if you don't mind my asking, how does that work? Is it birch wood? Either way very cool and good work, I'll bet you can't wait to get that thing loaded.

It works very well! If you have a look thru my threads there is one called "how I spent my Sunday" (too hard for me to find the link while browsing on my phone) that shows us digging out and preparing the big stump. It is an NZ native hardwood called Manuka.

Nice wood

looking great i wish i could get driftwood that nice my lfs sells crappy wood

David, the Stump looks fantastic. In fact it looks as natural as could be in that corner. The other corner I think if you cut the top down/off of that with just the spanned out branches might look great while not taking to much of the aro's space. At least in my eyes I can picture the substrate and your stump and branches with maybe some stones strategically placed. (at least in my mind. lol) I can see your angels calling that a nice home while quietly your aro is patrolling the top. Gonna look very awesome. Nice job!!

Cheers! I've got a whole bunch more wood to experiment with, just need to get around to dragging it out from under the house! I like your suggestion of reducing the height of the piece on the left, I'll see how it works with the other bits then give it a go. Substrate will be the regular builders sand I've used in my past set ups, with a few stones and a bit of gravel mixed through to give it a bit of variety.
