So I got my Retic (I refuse to say Teacup...) today and everything has gone smoothly. It took him a little bit to explore his surroundings and get comfortable but now he's active and seems pretty happy. My only concern is that he hasn't really eaten that much/anything. Is it just because he's had a long day with the transition back from the store and is still getting acclimated? Should i be concerned? And also, do i remove the thawed brine shrimp chillin at the bottom or do i let him eventually eat them?

Ill attach some pictures at the bottom. Let me know if he looks skinny to you. I cant tell if he's thin or just young.
Thanks :stingray:

I'm with you on that, never say Teacup!! Right first of all I'm gonna say I don't own a ray, but I've put a lot of reasearch into them as I'm in the middle of building a tank for rays as we speak (,: Its pretty normal for a ray not to eat at first, transport for them can be fairly stressful! Your attacted pictures don't seem to be working man so I couldn't comment on wether he looks skinny or not ): Try not to leave uneaten food in there for to long BUT.. I have heard of people when they get there ray leaving food in for 24 hours then taking it out and placing it untill it eats.. All the best man and try get them pictures sorted, I'd love to see your Retic! (:

He is extremely skinny (hips showing). Not sure on the ID seems very dark in coloration. My advise is lights off and not back on again till it is eating well and separate it from any tank mates that will bother or steal food from it. Also night crawlers chopped in very tiny pieces is the best I have found for getting rays eating. Very tiny is the key. Emeciated rays will only eat tiny bits at a time and will chew and spit out a lot of the food. It will probably not take to brine shrimp. Another good food is live ghost shrimp. What ever it will eat, is what you should stay with till it starts putting on weight.

Next question is how long has the tank been set up, what are the tank mates, and what type of filteration do you have...

I overhauled my 55 last friday. So its been running with new sand and live plants for a good week before i bought him. I have a Fluval 305 running and hes the only fish in the tank. I know 55 is generally a tad small for a ray but he has a ton of room to move around.

Lights are out, i took the shrimp out, and put in some bloodworms. he seems to be eating some of the bloodworms now. ill keep this updated. Water temp is 77 *F btw

That's a wicked ray! But I don't think its a retic man, that thing is almost black in colour, retics are normally a brown colour! I'll wait for one of the ray experts to take over hear and hopefully give you a proper I.d, 99.9% that's not a retic though.. Worth finding out as you probably know retics are small other breeds are far from it! Good sign that its eating though keep us posted

Def not a retic but really not sure what u have there........but 55 is more than a tad too small and not quite enough filtration you should be cycling at minimum 10× tank capacity per hour temp should be closer to 80°and eventually you're looking at need more toward 300+ gallon tank .........what are your water parameters now?

just realised this tank is like a week old, and most likey uncycled, could almost garentee ammonia will kill your ray. especially in that small tank
