Day 1 with the Retic

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea I agree short of almost daily water changes it'll be a miracle if it survives

pH - 7.4
Ammonia - .25 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm

Should I add some ammonia remover? Stupid question but i just wanted to ask before i did anything else to the tank

No, you should start doing water changes, lots of water changes.

If i was able to re-do this scenario, what would have been idea?
Im talking tank, filtration, cycling period, etc. bc apparently im doing all of this wrong.
Obviously I want this to work out with my ray, its the most incredible animal ive ever purchased

I would Add the ammo remover, do you have friends w/ tanks? They could give you a piece of bacterially colonized sponge. Bacteria is what converts ammonia to nitrate, then you take out nitrate with water changes. If this is possible, put the colonized material into the tank ASAP. I'd even ask the guy you got it from and explain the situation maybe the LFS will give you some colonized material.

I'd go with the ammo remover though, it will convert the ammo into ammonium that won't hurt your ray so much. And the developing bacteria will be able feed off it.

Tank thats like 6 preferably 7 or 8 feet long and three feet wide

Lots and lots of filtration, preferably a large sump, also you should wait untill your readings are 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and under 20 ppm nitrate

Also research is key, do lots of reading.

I dont agree, I think doing heavy water changes would be of more benefit

Your tank is way to small for a ray, 6x2x2 is bare minimum even for the smallest of breeds! Filteration is really personal preference, Although a sump is probably your best bet.. If not large external filters! These fish produce a lot of waste, over filterisation is key to ray keeping success! People who keep rays turn there water over 3x per hour + generally and use a lot of bio media to get rid of that nasty ammonia!! Cycling can be done in many different ways.. Think a fishless cycle is the fastest way but some peope use somewhat "disposable" fish to cycle a tank.. Your best bet would have been googling cycling tanks and and putting in some reasearch.. Sorry to be a killjoy man I can see you really want a ray but without the proper set up keeping a ray is basically just torturing a ray ): One thing I will say is make sure you have a heater guard, rays can really burn themselves badly on heaters.. Annother advantage of having a sump is heaters can go in there away from the ray!

I really appreciate the input guys. this is exactly why i joined MFK. Until i get the money saved for a new tank im just gonna have to seriously monitor the water parameters and focus on fattening the ray up. ill let you know if anything goes on.
Once again, thanks for the help

I recommend 30-50% WC daily for at least a 1 1/2 month. By the time you see the ammonia/nitrite spike, it will be too late. I hope it makes it...interesting to see what it is. If it is eating, that is a great sign needs to eat 2 or 3x per day. If it survives, it can live in that size for a short time, but I would get a 180g min. within a few months that would give you some time.
