I have always used buckets of water premixed with dechlorinator/ water conditioner.... Whenever doing water changes.
A lot of fish buddies I know, just use a hosepipe and add straight to their tank, only adding water conditioner after the tank is full. They don't have ant problems, but Doesn't this greatly reduce the effect of w.conditioner?

I' m curious, as I can't always be bothered to carry buckets. Just wanna make my life a little easier...But don't want to risk causing bug changes in water parameters, as I have 2 new ray pups....

Tank holds about 430litre, and I change about 130-140 litrs x2/wk

yea your supposed to add enough conditioner for the whole tank volume when you do it that way.

i used to do the way you do. then i tried it the other way it was easier. i didnt see the fish freaking out like i thought i would the first time so i continued doing it.
i would use prime or another condition that works instantly as soon as it hits the chlorinated water

I condition the water in the tank with enough conditioner for the entire volume of the tank. I put the de-chlor in before filling it with fresh water.

I too have just been filling my tank from the hose, as it's filling, I use the water conditioner.

I've never had any problems and all my fishes look happy to me =]

Thanks everyone.

But, why add whole tank volume worth of conditioner, why not just the dose equivalent to the volume of water changed?
ie, 25% wc= add conditioner enough for 25 % tank volume of water

For Prime at least it says on the bottle to dose for tank volume. So I'm hoping they know what their talking about, maybe their just trying to get people to use more Prime, lol.

i put in half when i start then put the other in when about halfway done. i dont dose for the whole tank but i put in more than for what im replacing.

From what I know the declorinator is not really important for the fish, they can live in starait tap water, the declorinator is to preserve the BB in the filter. Since I have started useing a python to do w/c I add my prime after the tank is filled before I turn the filters back on, and I have nerve had any problems

most places have chloramine in the water supply. a dechlorinator breaks this down into chlorine and ammonia. it remove the chlorine probably into gas, then bonds with the ammonia making it non toxic. some other dechlorinators may leave the ammonia.

if you have ammonia in the tank it may use up all the bonding agent and still have ammonia left over. its also possible the chemicals prime uses may interact with other natural chemicals in the tank and get used up.

you can always ask seachem there answer department is impressively efficient.

edit: i checked the answer is that prime can bind with other organic in the tank.
