RIGHT! My thoughts exactly. They look like a pain more than anything..
I took a chance on Craigslist and asked someone if they would consider selling the FX5 in their setup for sale being that it was listed as "A bit noisey". They responded with:
"Sure, I'll sell it for $50. but it doesn't pump correctly."
I called them up, showed up and asked them to show me how well it did pump. They hooked it up to the sink and a 5gallon bucket and as soon as it turned on, it started PUmping like mad! THAT was all that i cared about... So I gave him the $50, took it home, cleaned it up, went online and visited a "youtube" video that showed the maintianence and care.
The guy MUST have NOT read the manual at all. The FX5 has a built in priming sequence that will start running after unplugged, for 2 minutes, then shut off for 2, then kick back on and run until unplugged... Also shutting down every 24hours to push out any built up air.
The Thing is PREFECT! Literally, except me having to fabricate a tiedown pin for one of the locks.
FX5 For $50 BABY! On my 75 Gallon Tropheus/ Frontosa Tank!!!! LOVE IT! And it's QUITE as can be. I literally can't even hear it. Esepcially because I have a couple of marineland 350's on the tank in the opposing corner!
So go on Craigslist, spend some time searching for a USED FX5, not being affriad to ask someone if they would sell it by itself! save some money and get a Fantastic FILTER! Water has NEVER been more clear!
