I have a complete plastic tote full of coral rock, which used to be live rock for a salt water tank.. some of it is lava rock as well. I easily have 80+ lbs of it.

Can it be re-used and made into live rock?

I don't know what to do with it, and I have no use for it..

I figured maybe a salt water person might know?

You can put it in an established tank and make it "live" again. I'm no saltwater guy (as you know), but it's definantly worth a few bucks to resell to someone who could use it.

You can put it into a tank and it will become live again from a bacteria standpoint, but obviously all the creatures and algae on it are dead.

Also, you absolutely do not want to put lava rock into a saltwater tank. It will throw the system off from a ph standpoint. You can sell the lava rock or any other land based rock to freshwater guys and the rest can go in a saltwater tank.

Is it completely dry? Does it have an odor? I definitely wouldn't put it in a tank with any live inhabitants.

In my opinion no it wont ever be fully live, but you can start growing some cool stuff on it.

Just put it into an established tank. Remember that real non farm live rock has been on the reef for...a super long time.

Nothing we can recreate in captivity.

The guy at the Pet Place in Lancaster said that if I get the bio cultured sand, and get the tank running, and put it in there with some already established live rock that over time it will become live rock again.

I don't know... I can always just soak it and put it in my frontosa tank for more PH stability.

Don't waste your $$$ on "live" sand. All sand becomes live after a time in SW & no sand is live in a bag on a shelf. Save your $$$ for live rock instead.

live rock never totally recovers. It will look cool again though if you seed it, and it will help filtration some. Live sand is only live if you get it from another running system. If it is in a bag, it aint live.
