Dead female pearl

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big is the peacocks? Could they have tried to take a snack? Im thinking something internal since there is blood coming out of its gills.

JK47 JK47 whats your thoughts on this?

It’s hemorrhaging and if all water perams are good, I only know of septicemia looking like this. Someone who is more experienced might be better to ask. I have minimal experience with illness. duanes duanes can I get your take? I’ve not seen septicemia in many years and it seems to be popping up for frequently as of late.

Hopefully it isn’t and is something else.

I came home to this today

She's in 180g. Tankmates are 3 silver dollars, 3 peacock bass, and a male pearl ray. All the other fish are fine and just as hungry as usual. I did a water change last night, I normally do 40-50% every 3-4 days. She's never been as active as the male, she tends to stay on one side of the tank. Eats fine but not as much or as aggressively as the male.

I have no idea what could've caused this.

What size is the male? Any redness or irritation on his belly? Also do you have a closed loop or overflow it could have been stuck to? Given enough pressure it could cause a similar injury. There is no death curl so it appears to have died relatively quickly.

How is the male doing? Maybe have you noticed his stinger damaged? I’ve heard of rays stinging other fish when spooked..

I have 2 drains in the top right corner of the tank. Never had any fish stuck to them even the bass who were 2-3" when I put them in. Male is doing great, no redness that I've noticed, he's the same size as her 6-7".

Here is the last pic I took of her on the 19th

The pinkish color on its belly and disc points to somethings not right. Could be stress. Do you have anything to stabilize the ph? Could you got an swing in the ph with waterchange? I lost a ray due to unstable ph. The night before it was like normal and i did 80% wc. Next morning it was upside down and dead as a rock. What kind of filtration are you running on your tank?

I run a sump. Ton of media (substrat pro, matrix, ceramic rings), and a UV sterilizer. Sump drains into an xp4 body full of floss and pads.

Not sure about a pH swing. My city is upgrading the entire water system so it's possible. I'll check the tap vs the tank again.

Looks like the problem is pH. I tested the aquarium for everything then tested the tap. 0 ammonia and nitrites for both. Tap is less than 5ppm nitrate, tank is around 20ppm. Tank pH is 7.4 but the tap is 8.4 . How do I fix this?

Do you filter your water before it goes into your tank?

I treat it with seachem safe.

Sorry for the loss, sometimes if a dead ray sits on bottom for a long period blood can settle to the lowest point being its underside. Giving the appearance of hemoraging. Not saying its what we see but a possibility. Watch and observe the male. The PH can be the issue but not necessarily. My tap PH is 8.2-8.3. And my tank is always the same #s as tap. Question is why is your PH dropping in your system.
