the two pink things are not embryos but the left and right lobes of the liver. they look healthy to me. the black thing that you said burst and produced green liquid was the gall bladder.
I agree that the dark green liquid is from the gall bladder. I would think the liver would be darker and reddish in color instead of a lighter pink. THe red circle points to the spleen, and the green is the spiral intestine. I think the blue circle is just the area from the stomach leading into the intestine. The ovaries would have been located on the dorsal side of the ray.
What size ray is she? The liver seems rather large.
if you have your ray in with tetras then im gonna asume its some filtration related issue .
rays are more sensitive to alot of things that other fish wont show any problems with
i had another two rays in with the one that died and thats the only reason im discounting water related issues . if there wasnt another ray in the tank it would be the first thing i would blame .
i think this one has died as a result of the pregnancy . i think the unborn pups should be much more developed than they are as there is basically nothing to them but mush and one is very different from the other ( if indeed thats what they are but i cant see them being anything else ) it would have also been its first litter .
the only consolation i have from loosing this female is that i still have two happy and healthy rays swimming round .
thanks for the suport for those who offered it . sucks to loose a ray sorry about yorus too staffy
no i have another ray a female in there aswell, and shes fine so definetly not a filtration issue. To be honest its baffling me but guess ill never know? cheers though gaz
ok spot fin and sam thats great. thats what i wanted to know .
she was 11" ish . maybe bigger if you measure top to bottom of the disc rather than side to side .
the midle circle i wondered if there was some sort of blockage in the intisine as it gets very thing there . she seemed to be fat yet skinny at the same time fat as in tail and rear allways looked good . there was poop there when she died but she looked skinny around the disc and between the eyes .
maybe just clutching at straws now but thanks for clearing up the pregnancy thing that helps alot .
if its not that im going to have to put it down to stress from the male ray .
thanks chloe and staffy for your comments.
she was really looking nice too but i guess these things happen .
all other fish in the tank are fine although the male has turned his attention to the other female in the tank.
if someone could do that disection on a ray that would be great , i have no idea at all what im looking at , but thanks sam i know they are similar and a member of the shark family .
cant beleive the liver is so big !
could it be usefull for anyone who looses a ray to a suspected internal parasite problem . to actually have a look for internal parasites
i think this could be helpful if someone has more than one ray in the same tank with one dying if they suspect internal parasites .
so anyhow it looks like the pressure from the male is to blame .
i will be looking into a suitable punishment for the male and possibly put him infront of a jury of his peers to decide his fate .
