As well, use some of commercial bb, they work great! But it takes more time than what they say they need: 3 days but you need at least 2 weeks.

I like Pond Clarifier by Organica. We use it to keep the water really clear in our indoor pond, but it also absorbs ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate (cannot attest to any but nitrate, and that it does lower), and is a Bb. It's fairly expensive, but it lasts a long time. I really hesitate to use "chemicals" (ammo-lock, ammo-zorb, etc,), other than Prime, of course, and this does a good job and you don't have to add it that much after the water is established.

You don't have to add BB at all once the colony is established. They have no trouble reproducing and putting in additional bacteria will do nothing good. I do know there is a brand of BB that cannot reproduce. Adding that type will temporarily starve the colony, then slam it with extra duty when they die.

I meant that it could be added for clarity... it really keeps the water very, very clear. Not that she's going to need to supplement her biological filtration... obviously, that should take care of itself.

sorry bout hearing that 23 of your fish died, hope your pond gets cycled and dont have that amonia spike again

i live in the tampa bay area, a cold front blew in and my pond is shallow (1 1/2 to 2 ft deep) so it was affected by the cold.
