How big of a tank do you have? Thickness of the sand on the bottom of ur tank... the last time you siphoned through the sand....

It's a 150. That wasn't going to be its tank forever as im in the process of making a 8x3x3 plywood. The sand is like 2-3 inches deep and the last time i did a water change was when i turned the sand and siphoned it

ok, with rays you need at MOST 1" of sand, im betting that there is quite a bit of left over food and stuff in your sand. before you get another one cut that down to 1". The reason it is puffed up like that is because something was irritating the bottom of its disk.

I have to question the 1" of sand. I hear that a lot about keeping sand to a minimum. Why is that? With proper maintenance 2-3" should be fine correct? In the wild, they do not have 1"of sand until they reach the glass bottom.... What is the reason for the sand being kept to a minimum

If you properly maintain yes.... 3-4 is fine however we all know that we slack some times, and we know how hard it is to clean sand to its full. Also in the wild if they dont like the sand they can move somewhere else. i am willing to bet the ray spent a lot of time swimming up the side of the glass before it died

Thanks for the input, and the ray was swimming in the middle of the tank and along the glass the night before.

yea....3-4in of sand is not good at all. you will get toxic gas pockets in there making ur ammonia spike and other things. I took my sand out bc it was turning black and smellin like rotten eggs, bc my 1 motoro couldnt sift through the sand fast enopugh and i only had like 3/4" of sand. sry buddy

Sounds like something else was wrong. As stated earlier in the post, as long as you keep up with maintanence, having more than 1" of sand should be fine.
