My intakes are 2" there are two of them one on each side of the tank, each of them is about 2" below the surface.

My return is 1" below the surface and shoots out horizontally across the top of the water.

I figured this is less then idea so I have 2 1300gph power heads attached to the top of the tank one right next to the return directed at a 45 angle which looking at the particles seems to take the water from the top force it to the bottom where it hits the side and comes back up to the top next to the intake.

The second power head is doing the same thing but is closer to the second intake.

I can see the water getting push down to the bottom and back up to the intakes on both sides. I know its not taking 100% of the filtered water to the bottom, and is not take 100% of the unfiltered water to the top.

I was thinking that with close to 3500GPH combined filtration and power heads that there should be enough water movement for osmosis to take place.

I just changed this setup today before the returns where 2" below the water but shooting straight down, with enough force to remove all the sand from that section. I made the change because I am sick of the air bubbles, any one think I have anything to be worried about?

Sorry, you lost me.
Have not a clue what you are asking.

I was just meaning the the filter cleans the water, so that even if it never touches all the water the way it mixes brings the clean and dirty water will reach an equilibrium.

I guess I will check it today and again next week. do you just put your finger over the tube and stick it down there and then move it when your at the bottom.

Correct. Now I use a large syringe that I water some smaller house plants with (from tank water) that I stick an airline on I use to pull water from mid-tank.

I tested my mid level water for ammonia this morning. Suprisingly, even if I never read ammonia in the last years (top water level), I had positive results. It is very desorienting and I must admit that taking into account dead spots forces me to reconsider all my filtration setup. It might means that the majority of normally filtered tanks are containing significative ammonia levels.

I tried something else and will see if it worked tomorow. I turned the two spray bars of my eheims (one at each end of the tank) to the vertical position so that clean water is distributed equaly from top to bottom and middle water moves more. Any suggestions ?

The tank is a 55 filtered by two eheims 2217 and an AC 50; it only contains a 4 inches JD.

I have just retested the ammonia level (an hour later), it worked. The top water still contains 0 ppm and the middle water contains an insignifiant level (less than 0,25 ppm) compared to the first test (0,5 ppm). If the tendecie is maintained, it should indicates 0 in an hour or so. I will test tomorow morning.
