actually found it in a lake at my parents house when collecting driftwood. completely intact. i had soaked it in bleach to sterilize and whiten. will it mess up my parameters? will it decay?

Well, i dont know but i wouldnt put any real skelotons in my aquarium at any time.

any reason not to?

its completly natural and better then those stupid ass fake flouscent plants and castles lol.

my setup is with driftwood, rocks, plants, and brown playsand so it looks like a pond and i think this would look good with it.

i just need to know if there is anything that it would do to the water quality and if it would decay being at like 78 degrees

I've seen it done exactly as you describe. No noticeable ill effects. The tank has JD's, Con's, a Pike Cichlid, and a couple small cats.

As for decay, as you say it's natural. I would say yes it would decay, but very slowly. Probably the same rate as your drift wood. You will have to take it out and clean the algae off of it probably to keep it nice looking.

As long as all of the "meat" is off of it, it should be fine. The bone will slowly dissolve and raise the hardness, but probably not a noticeable amount. Should make a sweet "ornament"

It may increase water hardness a bit, especially if your water is currently soft and/or acidic. These conditions will also hasten decay. If it's in a pretty big tank the change should be slight. Some types of snails may chew on the bone.

thanks mystus and andy...

if it does raise the hardness...i do have peices of wood in there as well so im thinking it would probably just balance each other out.

when should i notice any ph changes if any? like a week into it?

noto, its the 125 in my sig

If you're worried about "meat" just boil the whole thing and scrap any remnants off. I imagine that if it was in the lake, a bunch of little critters have cleaned it pretty well.
