Dearborn Michigan has a pending ordinance that will ban garages being used for living space. So all you people keeping fish tanks in your garages or have man cave setups in your garage may be breaking the law soon. How stupid would this law be..

Just having doors doesn't make it a living space. Nor does having an aquarium. They are treading a very fine line on how to impose this one. I understand where they are coming from and what is driving this, and it has nothing to do with man caves.

Man Cave is just an example of what people use there garages for. There purpose is to require new building or remodeling permits which equates to new fees more ways to make people pay more money to the city.

Simply put, multiple families living in one house. It is very easy to assemble a couple walls and have a room. Of course, without the proper permits and certifications, it could potentially become a fire hazard or a death trap in an emergency situation.

I saw a lot of this in my old neighborhood. One of the reasons I moved.

I'm good with the pics in the link. Simply a different door than what you normally see on a garage. To me, its no different than a service door.

Where you get into the issue is where people put couches, beds, and heaters in there and now have habitable living quarters.

Thanks for the reply.This brings to mind the thread that Sumo started earlier about the problems the city is giving him about his yard.Perhaps I'm looking at this too simplistically but as long as I am paying my taxes I don't want someone from Ciy Hall breathing down my back and telling me what I can and can't do with my own property.As far as multiple families living in a home,I have no big issue with that unless it is a govt. subsidized rental home(section 8).

Another stupid law. I heard Texas is trying to pass a new building code that all new houses have to be wheelchair accessible...even if you are building your own customized home and no one in your family is handicapped.

I was listening to Detroit radio and they were saying people were fixing up abandonded homes garages and using those as man caves and such.

That's not right...If you don't want access ramps built on your property who is anyone else to tell you otherwise.All across the country it's as if all elected officials are all smoking the same dope.
