Dearborn Michigan has a pending ordinance

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was listening to Detroit radio and they were saying people were fixing up abandonded homes garages and using those as man caves and such.
Well that's squatting which is a little different than someone modding their own property.

All across the country it's as if all elected officials are all smoking the same dope.

And not sharing what is obviously the good stuff to come up with some of the crap they do.

On the garage thing, I suppose if it already isn't up to code for other living areas in terms of fire breaks and other health issues, I could see bringing it up to code for that if you plan to spend a lot of time there. But the cynic in my says it's mostly for extra fees.

Yeah,I got no problem with codes and such but there's no need for a task force to go around inspecting property owners garages lol.

Agreed. I think the justification behind it is if you use it as a living space, it needs the same safety requirements as any other living space in a house ... and currently since they are garages, they don't have any codes to cover that and no way to check to see if it in code since it's currently not governed.

I can understand if your garage is separate from your house. But if its attached and part of the house I think the original building code must cover the whole house. I know lots of time the walls in the garage are not sheet rocked and no ceilings but if there is wiring for switches and plugs they are still inspected at code as well as plumbing. How the studs in the walls are built and roof joist are all at code. So how can they say its not safe.

Okay, some of the garages on my street are two story...they have what can be used as an apartment or a studio on the second level...Like I said as long as this is all about codes and zoning then that's fine.Thats about as far as they should be able to go when it comes to telling property owners what to do .

Another stupid law. I heard Texas is trying to pass a new building code that all new houses have to be wheelchair accessible...even if you are building your own customized home and no one in your family is handicapped.

So would all multi story home have to have lifts our elevators installed?

i think the law is too invasive on property owners' rights, some damn corrupt officials

on the handicap part, i think the having ramps for house/door entrances would be a good idea because you'd be less likely to trip than with stairs >.< more convient
but i don't support the need for private houses to require ramps, public buildings maybe
