Water conditioner neutralizes chlorine, heavy metals, and such. This does not necessarily include degradation products of old conditioners. It might very well have contained a microbial or fungal toxin. The first aid for poisoning is to remove the causative agent. Thus the water change. No alternative!

IC now it makes sense....

sorry to hear that harley it sounds like we have a bit in common i switched to prime and only keep a small botlle enough for 4 months after my conditioner poisoning

have you tried using an R/O unit instead of the conditioner? I have bad city water too. I run mine into a 20 gal bucket with a shutoff valve. I use a heater in this and a powerhead to siphon. started this 2 years ago, and haven't had a water change problem since. you can add buffers to suit your fish's specific water chem. if you're worried about the cost, add up the cost of lost fish. and your personal agrivation

sorry for the loss HarleyK. Out here in jersey, the water gets to be so bad that the fish slime comes off even with adequate water treatment.

that works for small water changes where you dont mind using ph additives and minerl replacement but for multi tanks its a pain and it takes forever to fill a 5gall with my ro unit let alone 50 or 60 gallons a week
it is good for small soft water tanks though where its a fifty fifty mix

That's smart! Hard lesson to learn, though. If I remember correctly, you lost your plecos!? Or was that yet another poor soul who had problems with a water change?

Sorry to hear about your fish dying. It really sucks when that happens.
