But I have to ask: if you went through the trouble of a backup AC, why didn't you consider a temperature alarm as a final failsafe?

It's one of those things that fell through the cracks. The sensor started going off for no alarm condition. After several 'cry wolf' incidents, the alarm was disabled. Unfortunately, it was simply forgotten after that. In fact, it's been off for 3 years. Never had the need to rely on it in that time.
