Its difficult to say that hybridization causes issues. I know with cattle and a lot of other animals, hybridization of a lot of pure but inbred species leads to a phenomenon named "hybrid vigor". They just get tougher and less prone to disease. Not sure about hybrid fish though, and you're right, until we keep them to full potential we'll never know their true lifespan. It definitely looks like you keep all your fish in the best conditions. Sorry for your loss.
thats pretty interesting... yeaa im aware of hybrid vigour with ligers and such... but im not as certain about fish. I know that these hybrid cats grew EXTREMELY fast at the start... and that rampant hybrid growth may have had long term effects that nobody truly realises... but yea it will be interesting to see the results for proper test subjects... Although i dont really look at my pets as test subjects...
Sorry for the loss, but this has me thinking, what do you do when a large fish dies? You can't flush a 3' fish, even 6" is getting a bit big for a toilet bowl.

u can either bury it really deep in your garden.... orrr wrap it it properly in bin bags and throw it in the outside bins.
Hey TL, big fan of your setup. Nice to see people keeping monsters in big ponds.
Out of curiosity, do you test for Nitrates? If so, what are your normal Nitrate readings?
(Sorry to hear about the hybrid passing).
I never really had to test for nitrates in the past.... but yeaaa my fish guy usually tests it everytime he maintains the pond every few months... there was never a problem in the last check... but today is the next cleaning so it will be interesting to see the results...
