So today i came home to my wels catfish spiraling out of control, should i just put it out of its misery? i think he rammed the acrylic really hard and damaged his spine. he swims with his mouth open and upside down. I was heartbroken at the sight since hes my most prized fish right now in my collection. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo2tQZHLPdc

It could be something like a concussion in people. There is a chance he will recover. I'd leave him be for now and observe. He looks ok otherwise to me.

... unless there is any reason to suppose that this could be a brain-dwelling parasite, usually a worm, or a bacteria that affects the brain. What makes you guess he just rammed hard into a wall? I'd expect his snout/lips be bruised.

Looks like it could be an internal problem imo , no external damage and gills pushed out a lot , it could be concussion always a possibility
I'd wait a while see if he improves and switch light out to help prevent further distress , good luck hope he improves for you :(

Is the fish any better now? I had tsn that did this after it jumped out of my pond. About a week later it died and the other tsn i had with iy started to do the same thing right after its death. That one also died. Im sure in my case some type of infection must have passed from one fish to the other. Just looks very similar to their behavior at the time. Im sure this is probably something different. On a side not i have had a catfish die from striking the side of the tank but it was pretty instant. LSN hit the side twitched and spiraled downward to the bottom and was done. This could be that just less severe but obviously not good.

It is starting to sound more and more to me that this may be a parasitic/bacterial problem. If you are not sure that it was indeed a physical injury, I'd start a treatment asap.

My IDSs did that and some others. It was obviously an infection though in my case (reddened body areas). Erythromycin cured them.
