So over the weekend I spotted a discus for $69.99 on death-row at a local LFS. He was laying on his side in the back of the tank, solid black, cloudy eyes, and almost all of his fins ragged/torn/rotted away. Poor guy finally spotted us and swam over to "look" though with the severity of his eyes, I doubt he can see much other than shadows. I felt so bad for him. I asked what was going on and was told that they didn't know, and that "he just started doing that".

Whatev. So, I asked how much they wanted for him, and that I wanted to take him home to the q tank and give him a shot. He came back and said we could just have him. I watched happily as he scooped him up, bagged him and set him on the counter. I couldn't wait to get him home.

Well once home, we got him in the tank and watched him explore this new environment to the best of his seeing capabilities. I gave him a piece of drift wood, since that was what he was laying beside at the store. He chooses to hover near the heater. Last night, I decided to move one of my juvies in with him because I noticed some white poo and that his appetite is not nearly what it was two weeks ago, so treatment for him was already on my mind before we got newbie. I believe that to be a good move on my part. Newbie seems happier knowing there is someone there, and that juvie always gets picked on, so he seems even happier, and a bit more confident. We had lost another rescue that had a bent spine, and was around 6 inches, to whom he had gotten attached too and stayed near him as if he were his protector. Understandable. So with the new guy being around 4-5 inches, I think juvie is feeling that again, not to mention that beneath the newb's black exterior, I can see a blood red and bright blue hue to him that lightened since we have had him, and his face is a yellowish white.

I want to make sure I give him everything he needs. So far he has gingerly picked at bloodworms and ignored flake. I don't expect him to be hungry in his state, but am worried about him keeping his strength up. Should I force feed? Seems to stressful in his state... I make sure to remove the excess food once a day, so he is getting a mini water change w/gravel vac every day, along with a 40-50% change every other day. I cannot find Prazi locally that isn't $50 for a tiny bottle, and the one I did find was expired.. :irked:, so I am going to order it, but wanted to know what else I am going to need to buy so that I can include it as well. I treated with some metro tabs, but am out of those now, and put methylene blue in there to (hopefully) help with any fungal problem until I could get some help. I know not to expect or hope for too much, but I do want to at least give him a chance, and with the improvement made in only two days, I have my fingers crossed for now

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

my hero ;)
lmao wonderful job.
looks kinda like a snakeskin
hopefully he makes a full recovery
you deserve alot of credit for saving him :)
if you need prazi i can ship it to you

Oh, good luck with him! I hope he gets better!

wow . . . how on earth did the LFS let him get to that stage? you have my utmost respect and best wishes, I hope it all works out

What in the hell did they do to him?!?!

Once I was in an ex- LFS, and I overheard the owner telling someone that it would be okay to put a group of baby Pygocentrus Nattereri with a large group of Pterophyllum Altum! I was looking in his run- down planted tank when I heard it! I immediately turned around and said, " I'm sorry, but that's just not, in any way, correct. That is the worst possible advice I've ever heard come from anyone. PERIOD." I told the lady all about her angels and she left, only buying some plants. I can't say that he gave me a discount that day, haha. See, now there WAS a reason why I said "ex-LFS owner"... haha:)

GOOD LORD!!!!!!

Looks like he came from a Nazi concentration camp. GAWD!!

I would do a FULL treatment of Metro. Just get the Jungle Labs Parasite Treatment.
Treat the full amount. Water changes in between doses.

Dose with aquarium salt 1 Tbsp/5 gallons and replace lost salt after water changes.

Raise the temp to 84-86

When you're done with Metro treatment, I would start a full week of Pimafix and Melafix treatment following the labels to the 'T'.

By the time the Metro treatment is done, he may be feeling good enough to eat.

(i dont have experience with Discus, but this is what I would do for any other SA/CA cichlid I have)

Good luck with him. Poor guy

WOW, that is rough. I'm surprised it is still alive. I hope it heals up well. I'd like to see pictures of it after the color and fins come back.

Thanks everyone for the advice, and kind words. I was just as shocked when I saw him. I don't blame the store at all, they are really great and very knowledgeable and one of the few stores around here I go to on a regular basis because of their fair pricing and variety, and that they actually care for their fish. I just don't know why he got to that stage....

I have a few questions regarding treatment:
- it was also suggested to put plants in with him, in addition to the driftwood. But it was also suggested that I add salt, which I have ready on hand, but I know that will kill the plants if I add it. Which is better/more beneficial in this case? Plants or salt? I cranked his temp up to 88-90 as well.
- If I do add salt, and continue with the 50% daily wc's, I should continue to add salt, ie. he is in a 20 long and if I take out 10 gallons, then I would add 2 TB (dissolved of course;) ) right? Sorry if it sounds stupid, most of my rescues haven't required this level of care or worry.
-Should I treat with Metro first? I want to make sure he gets the best treatment, and that I carry out said treatment in the correct order. I am very meticulous when it comes to medications, and dosing and the dosing schedule.
- What treatments are ok to combine? Unless I know for certain that they will not coincide with each other and harm anyone, I will not use them. Especially with discus.
- Pima and Mela? Would I use those together or one then the other? I am wary with mela, but have never used Pima. I heard a few horror stories about it so thats why I ask.

Also, an update on Newbie.

I came home from work late last night and went from tank to tank to turn on lights and wake everyone up as normal. I found my self holding my breath when I got to Newbies tank, since I try to expect the worst with rescues. It took me a few seconds of stuttering and yelling at my husband to make sense. You will see why.

Me:WHOA! OMG. OMG. uh.. he.. what's?? um.. WHATS WRONG WITH HIM?!
Him:What?! What?! Is it dead??
Me: NO!!! Look!!

Please forgive the blurry pictures. All I had was my phone at the moment.
